From the Christian Computing News Brief…

Someone has just cut you off on the highway. You see that they are driving fast and reckless and your blood begins to boil. Now there is something you can do! Law enforcement agencies in Washington and Arizona are providing Web sites where you can go and report the offenders. People can log in and describe the car and even give the license number if you have it. The police are not going to go and arrest someone on your say so, but the information will be passed down to the desk sergeants in charge of the traffic areas that receive the most complaints, and officers can begin to watch those areas more closely. If a particular offender is reported repeatedly by several people, officers will contact the person or write them a letter, informing them that they have been reported repeatedly and that they need to cut it out. The Internet can help ease the pain of those that have to deal with aggressive drivers and feel there is nothing they can do. Now they can report the problems and know that something might be done.

Cured: The John Cleland Story

Ran across this article tonight – it’s about the first guy with testicular cancer who was treated with Cisplatin and Dr. Einhorn, who is the guy who discovered it and is still considered the leading expert in TC. Cisplatin is the miracle drug that took TC survival rates from 10% to well over 90%. Once it spread into your blood stream and lymph system, it was only a matter of time. Even in my case, though it was caught early, I probably wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for Cisplatin and the research of Dr. Einhorn.

What’s even more amazing is that John was the first person to be treated with Cisplatin – because all other options had failed. And yet he is still alive and doing well 30 years later. Amazing stuff:

Today at work my phone call was answered on the other end by someone on a speakerphone. Not once, but twice. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that to be in very poor taste. For one, I consider my phone conversations personal – they’re not for the entire world to hear. Also, it’s difficult to hear when the other person is several feet away from the phone, and the sound keeps cutting in and out. Not to mention that it’s simply rude – you’re basically telling the other person that their call isn’t important enough for you to go through the laborious task of actually paying attention to what they’re saying, rather than continuing whatever you’re doing that’s so much more important. The speakerphone is for conference calls, not so that lazy people don’t have to bother with picking up the receiver.

It’s Franchise Overload, Charlie Brown

I was watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” earlier today, probably my favorite Christmas special. What’s funny is that it would never be made today… it’s far too low-key, it has a jazz soundtrack, and they actually have the audacity to mention Jesus. It’s funny how many Christmas shows today have some nebulous message about “the real meaning of the season”, yet miss the point entirely.

I know there are at least three other Peanuts Christmas specials. And of course everyone has seen “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”, and “Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown”. But I was wondering how many other Peanuts specials were made. The answer is: A lot. A quick check over at IMDB shows there were at least 50 (!!!) – how some of these were ever made is beyond me… here are some of the less-famous specials:

“You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown”
“It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown”
“She’s A Good Skate, Charlie Brown”
“It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown”
“You’re In The Super Bowl, Charlie Brown”
“It’s The Girl In The Red Truck, Charlie Brown”

Yeah, Mr. Schultz was scraping the bottom of the barrel with some of these. But the good Peanuts specials are timeless, so I guess you can’t blame him for trying to branch out.

Well, I’m going to hit the hay – we’ve all got a few busy days ahead of us.

Merry Christmas!
