Long Live the Queen

I was poking around on Pollstar, when I noticed that there were some tour dates for Queen. They have been one of my favorite bands for nearly 15 years now, ever since I first saw the video for “Innuendo” way back in the spring of 1991. But not six months later, the hopes of ever getting to see them live were dashed when Freddie Mercury died from AIDS. They put on the best shows of any band I’ve ever seen, live or otherwise, and I was disappointed that I would never get to see them live, nor would we ever have any new music from the original quartet.

So when I saw the tour dates, my interest was piqued… they apparently are touring with Paul Rodgers, the former lead singer of Free and Bad Company (“All Right Now”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”). Which is an interesting combination, because he sounds nothing like Freddie, and Free was an influence on Queen back in their early days. Unfortunately, all of the dates so far are in Europe and places other than the United States… which is understandable, because Queen only had widespread popularity in the US during the late 70s/early 80s – not counting the Wayne’s World-inspired resurgence in their popularity, which unfortunately came years after Queen stopped touring due to Freddie’s health.

But here’s hoping they make it over this way sometime soon…

Seinfeld LIES!

So, I was watching Seinfeld last night, and it was the episode where George buys the Frogger arcade machine because it still had his initials and high score from years ago. GLC – George Louis Costanza. As I was watching this, it hit me – Frogger never let you enter your initials for a high score! Don’t ask me how I remember, but there were indeed games a long long time ago that didn’t do the whole initial thing. Of course, they had to use Frogger for the payoff at the end of the episode where George is pushing the arcade console across the street (and subsequently gets destroyed by an oncoming truck).

Well, it looks like I’m not the only person who noticed this: http://www.slipups.com/items/11399.html

Wired News: Altered HIV Attacks Mice Tumors

Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles have tweaked HIV to create a gene therapy that attacks cancer tumors in mice.

The research is a step forward for the beleaguered field of gene therapy, which has enjoyed isolated successes and suffered repeated setbacks over the past 20 years. But tinkering and fine tuning will be the key to a successful gene therapy, UCLA researchers believe. They published their study in the Feb. 13 issue of Nature Medicine.
