Long Live the Queen

I was poking around on Pollstar, when I noticed that there were some tour dates for Queen. They have been one of my favorite bands for nearly 15 years now, ever since I first saw the video for “Innuendo” way back in the spring of 1991. But not six months later, the hopes of ever getting to see them live were dashed when Freddie Mercury died from AIDS. They put on the best shows of any band I’ve ever seen, live or otherwise, and I was disappointed that I would never get to see them live, nor would we ever have any new music from the original quartet.

So when I saw the tour dates, my interest was piqued… they apparently are touring with Paul Rodgers, the former lead singer of Free and Bad Company (“All Right Now”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”). Which is an interesting combination, because he sounds nothing like Freddie, and Free was an influence on Queen back in their early days. Unfortunately, all of the dates so far are in Europe and places other than the United States… which is understandable, because Queen only had widespread popularity in the US during the late 70s/early 80s – not counting the Wayne’s World-inspired resurgence in their popularity, which unfortunately came years after Queen stopped touring due to Freddie’s health.

But here’s hoping they make it over this way sometime soon…

It’s Franchise Overload, Charlie Brown

I was watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” earlier today, probably my favorite Christmas special. What’s funny is that it would never be made today… it’s far too low-key, it has a jazz soundtrack, and they actually have the audacity to mention Jesus. It’s funny how many Christmas shows today have some nebulous message about “the real meaning of the season”, yet miss the point entirely.

I know there are at least three other Peanuts Christmas specials. And of course everyone has seen “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”, and “Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown”. But I was wondering how many other Peanuts specials were made. The answer is: A lot. A quick check over at IMDB shows there were at least 50 (!!!) – how some of these were ever made is beyond me… here are some of the less-famous specials:

“You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown”
“It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown”
“She’s A Good Skate, Charlie Brown”
“It’s Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown”
“You’re In The Super Bowl, Charlie Brown”
“It’s The Girl In The Red Truck, Charlie Brown”

Yeah, Mr. Schultz was scraping the bottom of the barrel with some of these. But the good Peanuts specials are timeless, so I guess you can’t blame him for trying to branch out.

Well, I’m going to hit the hay – we’ve all got a few busy days ahead of us.

Merry Christmas!

Took ’em long enough!

And the Sox sweep it in four… pretty cool, I must say. Hopefully it won’t take them another 86 years to win the Series.

On a slightly related note, Google can be really weird. When I was searching for that image over there —>, one of the pictures it pulled up while searching for “red sox” was a photo of Dylan Klebold – one of the Columbine shooters. Kind of creepy.

On a completely unrelated note, now that my upstairs neighbors have moved out, I’ve been watching the Band of Brothers DVD set with the volume turned way up… if you haven’t seen it, I strongly recommend at least renting them… it’s about 12 hours worth of content, but well worth it. It’s alternately inspiring and disturbing, but always interesting.

The man who was responsible for the definitive portrayal of the definitive superhero died last night…

Christopher Reeve, the star of the “Superman” movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52.
