The Greatest Band No One Will Ever Hear

I just found out that one of my favorite bands, The Marvelous 3 have called it quits. They had a minor hit a few years ago with “Freak of the Week”, for those who might remember. Their last album came out about two years ago… the guitarist/singer/primary songwriter Butch Walker released a solo album Left of Self Centered in Feburary, so I assume they’ve been defunct for some time. Oh well… I’ll have to check out the solo disc and see what it’s like. If you haven’t heard any of their stuff, and like straight-ahead rock and roll (they’ve been compared to old school Cheap Trick), I strongly suggest you check them out!

Manic Monday

Well, I had a lovely weekend for the most part. Saturday night I saw Steven Curtis Chapman again, and this was his best show yet. I don’t think I’ve been to a more emotionally-exhausting concert ever. Between the segments about his recently-adopted daughter and the “Beyond the Gates of Splendor” set, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. And of course, the music was super as well – he has some excellent musicians in his band. Just a great show all-around.

Intuition

My first “real” band was a little outfit we called Intuition. We rocked C-town during the very late 80s up until mid 1993… it was a lot of fun, but in retrospect we took ourselves way too seriously 🙂 But that’s to be expected I guess. Anyway, one day we did a number of black and white promo shots, and while I know we had some developed, I haven’t been able to find them for years. I got a hold of a film scanner, and here are the results.

A veritable lesson on how NOT to do promo shots… dig the cutoff shorts, the not-quite-long hair, and sunglasses which were outdated even when the pictures were taken. And the requisite brick wall backdrops throughout. Comedy gold!

Deja Vu All Over Again

This is the first day it has actually felt non-summer-ish… appropriate, since Fall officially started this weekend.

I was just outside mowing my yard in the cooler weather, listening to some old Guns N’ Roses, and was practically knocked over by a wave of nostalgia. Suddenly, it’s 1988, the beginning of my sophomore year of high school… constant trips on the school bus to football games or band contests. That was also the beginning of my self-imposed morphing from junior high nerd to angst-ridden teen rocker guy. Kind of hard to do with braces and Bon Jovi, but I gave it my best shot!

Anyway, it got me to thinking about high school. While I wouldn’t want to go back and re-do it (not even “knowing then what I know now”), I do miss the friendships. A good dozen close friends that I hung out with on a regular basis, and even greater number of passing acquaintances I considered friends. That’s definitely the one aspect I would like to recapture… as long as I could do it without the acne, braces, 1983 Chevy Celebrity, mullet hair (yes, I proudly wore one throughout high school), girlfriend issues (more appropriately, the lack of one), etc. etc. etc. 🙂

I’m working on getting some video online from the last performance of my last band (April 2000, I believe)… it’ll probably be up tomorrow.

“Yowzah…”
